We just got back from Laguna San Ignacio. It
was really a great trip everything was perfect. Not much wind. Cool in the
morning but weather warmed up in the afternoon. There were lots of whales
everywhere and they were coming up to blow a big spout of water as they take a
breath of air. They kept their distance until about the last 20 minutes and for
some reason a mother and baby come over to the boat and put on a show for us.
They turned belly up and wanted us to pet them, and rubbed against a nearby boat
and our boat. It was very exciting to pet them and exciting for them also
because they bumped our boat a couple of times and jarred us pretty good. I got
some very good pictures and videos which I will post later. The flight over and
back was uneventful just like we expected, except for the fog-bound coast that
cleared below S.I. Lagoon. The dirt landing strip had been recently graded and
so was as smooth as glass. The preserve is protected and the tour group was
Kuyima and we highly recommend them - even served a lunch afterwards of
yellowtail fried in garlic, rice, tortillas and salad. Much appreciated after a
long day of only energy bars. They also furnished tea and coffee and cookies
while we waited for an available panga. The boat captains now earn money by
giving tours in the off season when they cannot fish, and they know the lagoon
very well. These are small boats holding a maximum of 8 people which comprised
our party. It was a wonderful day and we feel so fortunate as others in our
group have been here 3 other times and this was the most whale sightings and the
only time they were able to touch a whale. We landed back in Loreto about 4:15
pm and Don got gas.
